Introduction to evidence-based complementary medicine (GL-5015)

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what complementary medicines are and their potential roles in maintenance of health
  • Have a rational approach to assessing and interpreting the evidence for efficacy and safety of a complementary medicine for an individual patient
  • Be able to educate patients on a safe approach to the use of complementary medicines
  • Be aware that many complementary medicines have levels of evidence to support their use
  • Be aware of potential interactions between complementary medicines and prescription or over the counter medications
  • Understand the legal and ethical issues related to the use of complementary medicines

Author Bio:

Assunta Hunter BA (hons), ND, Master of Women’s Health, is a lecturer in Complementary Medicine at the Australian Centre for Complementary Medicine Education and Research (ACCMER) – a joint project of the University of Queensland and Southern Cross University. She has lectured in herbal medicine for 20 years, and is part of the ACCMER teaching team for the Graduate Certificate in Evidence-based Medicine. She has a special interest in women’s use of complementary medicines, and is in private practice at a women’s clinic in Melbourne.
